Who is this for?

Customers who track their IT asset data in the ServiceNow Configuration Management Database (CMDB) and want to use this information in other systems to add business context.

ServiceNow customers do this to enable visibility of asset ownership information in downstream systems, although any type of asset information can be synchronized. In most cases asset ownership information involves a hierarchy of asset metadata. Here is an example:

  • Business Unit: Manufacturing
  • Department: Pickup Trucks
  • Application: Inventory Tracking
  • Region: Midwest
  • Data Center / Cloud Provider: Data Center 1A
  • Operations Group: Tier 1 Applications

Sometimes additional types of metadata can be useful in downstream systems. One example of this is populating important device lifecycle milestone dates into a financial system for financial planning.

Why?

What?

ServiceLaunch delivers a custom, automated process that reads IT asset metadata from the ServiceNow CMDB and publishes it to a target system, such as Apptio, AWS Cost Explorer, NetApp Cloud Insights, or Veritas NetBackup IT Analytics, and keeps the two systems in sync. Here’s what we deliver:

  • A custom synchronization script
  • Testing and quality assurance (to ensure the script functions as designed)
  • Initial production deployment support and validation
  • Knowledge transfer (so you can support and maintain it going forward)
  • Ongoing version releases, maintenance, support and updates (optional)

Businesses like to customize they way they use and track their IT asset ownership according to their specific business need. As a result, IT asset metadata tends to be in many different forms within ServiceNow, and associated tables and views can be heavily customized. Additionally, IT asset data is often tracked at different levels of granularity, according to the internal workflow needs of the business.

For example, many businesses track IT asset ownership data for network switches, virtual machines, storage arrays and switches. However some businesses like to assign ownership to portions of these assets at a more granular level.

Why Custom?

Architecture

Lightweight & Customized

Our solution can run anywhere with access to both the source (ServiceNow) and target system(s). Whether you prefer to run it in the cloud, or in an on-premise data center, does not matter. The script extracts data from the ServiceNow REST API. We perform any data transformation required by the target system, and then push it into the target system via an API, which in most cases is also a web-based REST API. We build the solution most commonly in Python, but we can also deliver it in other scripting languages such as Go and Powershell. Here are some other key supported features:

  • Pushes incremental changes only, after initial sync to minimize data payload
  • Proxy connections
  • ServiceNow Oauth authentication
  • API key authentication
  • ServiceNow custom fields
  • Asset matching logic for smooth synchronization
  • Ability to define asset relationship hierarchies

Our ServiceNow asset metadata synchronization service is not expensive. In most cases our team can deliver this solution in about 16 business days of work effort, and we’re happy to provide you with a quote. We have a standard service definition that we review with customers during pre-sales discussions. In order to ensure we stay on track, we begin the engagement with a Requirements & Design Workshop to confirm your requirements match our standard service baseline. If we run into anything out of the ordinary, we’ll let you know and present you with options on how we can handle.
